When sending a certified letter, is it neccessary to send a copy to yourself?
I had some shoddy home repair work done. I had a faulty patio cover installed on my enclosed room. It keeps leaking and the company cannot seem to fix it. I am sending the company a letter this time telling them that if they cannot repair the problem this time (this will be the fourth attempt) I will contact the BBB and take legal action to get my money back. When I send the certified letter, do I have to mail a copy of the letter to myself or is a copy of what I sent sufficient? I don’t know if it needs to be mailed to myself in a sealed envelope to prove what I sent. Any advice appreciated.

no just tell the post office you want to send it certified with a return signature required . They fix it and charge you. They then require the person to sign for it. They ( the Post office )will send you back a receipt with a signature on it from who you sent it too.

You should not have to send a copy to yourself, seeing that you will receive a confirmation from the postal service when the letter has been received and signed for. And you will have a copy of the receipt and if all esle fails the post office will have it on camera that you sent it. Just make sure you send them a copy and not the original and send pictures of the problems along with the letter to show what you are talking about. It would not hurt if they were time and date stamped photos.

The post office will provide you with a receipt for the certified letter, and then the receiver must sign for the letter and you will get the receipt with the signature, so that you will know that they received the letter.
Make sure to give the company a time frame, something like this is my fourth attempt to have you repair the problem and if you do not fix it within 15 days from the date of this letter, legal action will commence. You might want to consider threating to write to the local newspapers or newstation or just cc: (copy) them in on your letter. Also, look to see if they are even listed in the BBB and if it’s small claims (less than $5000.00) you might want to consider researching how to file a small claims complaint at your local courthouse. really easy!
