It’s widely accepted by recruitment professionals that increasingly higher competition among today’s job seekers is making it harder for many applicants to successfully obtain interviews for positions in the organizations they wish to join.


In order to overcome this situation, the successful job seeker is learning more and more to use power words to help stand out from crowd in this increasingly competitive job market.


Even a few years ago, you probably would not have heard of the term keywords in the context of cover letters for resumes.


But, given the increased use of technology in screening the thousands of applicants applying for positions in Fortune 500 organizations, they have started to impact individuals and related industries in a big way.


But keywords, those hot words that are associated with special industries or job positions, are an important way that a job seeker can differentiate him or herself from the competition of other job seekers. Jay Block, an executive career coach in West Palm Beach, Fla., commented that if the ad says candidates need to have a bachelor’s degree, “bachelor’s degree” had better show up somewhere in your resume.


He also commented that job hunters need to look at ads for similar jobs from other companies. It’s important to recognize that each specific industry has its own inside “speak” or jargon, and knowing what specific words are important in the range of ads about certain job positions will help you spot the pattern of words that employers are continually using. Once you spot the pattern, a good tactic is to start using them yourself in you own resume cover letters and correspondence relating to getting an interview for a new position.


It’s important to understand that some keywords are the real ones that you need to take notice off. Although many keywords are industry specific, Mr. Block says, certain phrases are common among all organizations. These words continue to have favor today and they include “communication skills,” “problem-solving,” “team work,” “leadership,” “resource optimization,” and “image and reputation management.” The reason is that they relate to universal skills that are in hot demand by today’s employers.


“Business development” might be one of the most important of all, he says.


“I’ve interviewed many, many companies that will tell me, ‘Everybody from the floor sweeper to the national sales manager had better be involved in business development in some way,’ ” says Mr. Block.


Keywords are something that have been used by most people though their working lives – even if they don’t realize it at the time. They can be defined as simply the hot buzz words of a particular trade or profession. They clearly communicate something specific about the particular job function, qualification or specialist experience.


Some examples of these include increased market penetration for marketing personnel, shared vision for human resources personnel, customer development for sales staff and systems engineering for Computer IT Specialists.


As the market place has become increasingly competitive for job seekers , you will need to catch your potential employer’s attention by writing action driven statements that explain what value you can provide your prospective employer. Strong keywords are nouns that allow you to get the message across more successfully than most other means. They allow you to showcase your qualifications, capabilities and what you can offer the employer. Moreover, they are very hard to pass over so they tend not to be ignored.


It’s a well known fact in recruiting circles that keywords are a really effective way of enhancing your resume cover letters, broadcast letters and other styles of correspondence that you use to win job interviews. Strong keywords make a dramatic improvement to your presentation that should showcase achievements, qualifications and experiences that support your successes throughout your working career.


You might substitute, for example, revenue growth for bottom line improvement or efficiency and improvement for cost reduction and avoidance.


The potential list of keywords that can be used to create a professional image is very large and the more that you think of them, the easier it will be to incorporate them into your resume cover letters, resumes, thank you letters and other job search activities.


So, after you have worked thorough a listing of your “professional keywords”, you need to closely marry them to your background and simply drop the weaker terms. The most important part of the process is to make sure that these keywords are relevant to your profession. Use of in-appropriate keywords, or overuse of them, could also weaken your resume cover letter so it is important not to go overboard.


If you start researching the most powerful keywords for your profession, you will get the added advantage of educating yourself about the skills, qualifications and experience that is demanded by today’s employers in your particular field.


So, if you need to move away from your core area of experience and branch into a different job field one day, you will be well served by researching the right keywords to help you familiarize yourself with this new area and what is required by the candidate for the particular position.

Question by Pinball: career changer from seasoned sales rep to health care resume and cover letter help wanted!?
i am currently enrolled in a COTA program to become an occupational therapist. I am a career changer with 7 years of advertising sales and have a great resume for that however, I would like to get an entry level opportunity in healthcare setting. (since i do not have my liscensure yet i can not be a COTA) but would like to either work in an outpatient rehab or anywhere in a hospital. I really need advice on how to write a career changer resume and cover letter and more importantly I do not have any experience in healthcare. I tried to research online and had no luck. Resume cover letter software promises to make your letter undeniable in the eyes of the reader.  It almost guarantees that you will land the job.  Of course it’s not in their best interest to do this yet the sales pitch is pretty heavy on the side of absolute confidence you’ll make the interview.  I recently used such a program and though I didn’t land and interview at every opportunity.  I did find some aspects of the software useful and other aspects over exaggerated.

First, what I found that works from the software is the research into the correct wording you want to use.  For example, the format and language is different from medical to executive and educational.  For me, in the educational field, it came in very handy that the custom phrases and statements, that I just had to tweak by the way to make my own, were already in a language that the reader could relate too.  The reader relating to it was what I found to be important.  Just about every branch has its own dialect.  The closer I could get my letter to that the better my chances were to getting in the door.

What I felt under delivered, from what I expected, was the amount of editing I had to do.  I expected to just plug some information and voila, a perfect custom letter would pop out of the software.  Not so.  I had to tweak and adjust to make it my own.  Which is not really that bad considering that, it’s better than a generic letter found online or a letter that a resume cover letter software spits out, making no sense and not effectively engaging the reader.

When you think about it, it’s not that bad to have to tweak a cover letter.  It would have taken me much more time to research and find out how to better word my resume cover letter.  This way eighty five percent of the work is done and I just finish the customization of the letter along with personal information and personal experiences to make it stand out and make it more genuine and custom to myself.

Would I recommend the use if a resume cover letter software?  That really is up to the individual to decide.  I wanted every edge I could have to ensure I had my foot in the door.  I’m the type of person that doesn’t like to leave things to chance.  For that reason it was a good decision, for me.

In my experience, a good cover letter has made a difference between landing the interview and not. That’s the first step, right? I catch the reader with the knowledge I have of their organization and a few other key tips I learned to incorporate into my letter. I’ve helped my sister and brothers with their letter and they’ve also landed the jobs. What I picked made the difference on how I feel about resume cover letter software.

Entry level resumes and cover letters should be exciting to put together.  Throw caution to the wind and make your cover letter stand out.  Being new to a company or the field doesn’t mean you should be easily looked over.  I know there’s ways to make your cover letter stand out and above the competition.

 

First thing I like to do with my entry level cover letter is to sound energetic.  How do you sound energetic on a letter?  Play around with descriptive words.  Enthusiasm can go a long way.  Experience is strong but the enthusiasm is something companies sometimes lack.  Enthusiasm to get the job done and have something to prove to the company and to yourself can help you land the job.  Many times companies are looking for new energy to motivate themselves and others.  You can be that person.  Assuming its part of your personality!

 

Getting hired quickly also goes hand in hand with the interest you show.  If you’ve read Napoleon Hills book, Think and Grow Rich.  You’ll remember a section of the book where he describes wanting to be hired by a particular company.  He visited, called and telegraphed till he got what he wanted.  If you haven’t read it read it.  It’s a great book.  Make an effort to visit the place and try to deliver the resume in person to the indicated person.  Make a personal connection.  That’s an advantage emailed resumes don’t have.

 

Those two tips were proven to work when I was applying to jobs right out of college. Being that my experience was limited.  I couldn’t put together a long resume but I could make a professional custom entry lever resume cover letter that emphasized my energy and desire to learn.

 

Also, before I forget.  If you get a little knowledge on the company, for example, the field of work it in.  Manufacturing, development sales what ever and who the competitors are.  You can show yourself to be well informed and capable of the position.  The less they feel they have to teach you the better.  How much do you want the job?

 

Again with my entry lever resume cover letter these steps above helped.  I wish I could say for sure if it was luck or the letter but I was hired within a two month period.  I didn’t continue to apply anywhere else.  I like where I was hired and I plan on staying there for a while.  The opportunity for growth is there.
