CvWow.com – Our Top Interview Techniques
Rule 1: Research ahead, find out as much information as you can about the company e.g. who they are and what they do, also think about what skills you have that could make you an asset to them. This may come in handy conversation if the interviewer asks “what do you know about our company and why should they hire you”. Check out the website as many corporate websites will have information about the company and show images of employees in their work attire. Also, review the career section for comments on interview etiquette.
Rule 2: Dry run? I would always personally recommend you do a dry travel run to the location your interview will be. This will ensure you are familiar with the route and you may also have the opportunity to observe other workers behaviours. If you have any doubt about the companies attire make sure you call ahead of your interview and check with the companies HR / Recruitment team. Many companies however do expect professional attire for interviews so always make sure you check.
Rule 3: Always consider the type of position you are applying for as some creative positions such as advertising or design may allow for a more liberal look. Positions involving high-level consultations, or meetings with
Important, highend clients may require a prossional / classy look. If ever you are unsure ask a business dress expert / personal shopper at any good clothes retailer. It is all about understanding the companies culture and the position’s demands.
ON THE INTERVIEW DAY
Timekeeping is the key so aiming to arrive approximate 15 to 30 minutes later ensures you have a time safety barrier. The worst thing is getting delayed on a train or stuck in traffic and then having to dig yourself out of an embarassing situation of being late. 1st impressions count, arriving early will demonstrate that you are keen, punctual and time conscious. Being early also allows you time to straighten up in the toilet / bathroom, make sure you look the biz!
When you meet with the interviewer pleasantly smile and extend your hand for a firm hand shake. Act professional, approachable and formal ensuring your body language is suggestive and engaging. Remember the the interviewer has very limited time to make an assesment of you so at the part and look good!
WHAT TO WEAR
Whatever you decide to wear will influence the way you are addressed. If you dress like a pro you will feel like a pro. If you feel you have underdressed make sure you maintain a strong, professional demeanour. An erect posture always demonstrates confidence and remember when speaking avoid colloqualisms and words such as “like and “you know”. If you have miss-dressed mention you were misinformed however don’t worry, just welcome the opportunity to dress more professionally next time.
Attention to detail is crucial:
1) Clean and polished shoes are imperative.
2) Suit, Shirt or Skirt, making sure its clean and free from wrinkles. (Iron?)
Remember, The idea is to showcase you and not your clothes.
3) Have well groomed / shaved hair.
4) Make sure fingernails cleaned and trimmed. Ladies should avoid wearing bright nail polish.
5) Avoid scents (your interviewer may be a allergic)
6) Avoid catchy / flashy jewellery like watches / bracelets. Keep it simple!
7) Clean your teeth ensuring your breath smells ok.
Finally, check over what you are wearing in the toilet / rest room before going into your interiew.
Make sure you are ready for the moment.
