Think of a bartender resume as your self-promotional tool. This resume will determine who you are and how qualified you are.   To help you improve the quality of your bartender resume, there are 3 important  factors that we must address. 

1. Resume Writing
How well is your bartender resume written? Review your work, reread it a couple of times and look for mispelled words and improper grammar. Have others read your resume over as well.  Does it flow?  Does it make sense to them?  Here are three things to think about when writing your resume:

Brainstorming: Take time think of all your past job experiences and how they can RELATE to bartending.  Dig deep and look for other skills and qualifications that will impress your bar manager.
Your Initial Assessment. Before applying for a bartender position, ask yourself How qualified are you?
Background Information Gathering. Find for a hidden clues when responding to a job posting. Make sure to read, comprehend and follow the instructions as written.  Know everything you can able the establishment FIRST.

2. Formatting
There are three popular resume formats that work for any position, even bartending.  The list below should give you an idea on which one you’d want to used for your bartender resume. Think about what the managers are really looking for in a resume and a bartender.

Reverse Chronological
Functional
Hybrid

Reverse chronological resume format Listing your work experience starting from the most recent job first.  These should all be jobs that are relevant to the bartending position you are applying for.  If you came from a different job setting, you can choose to use this format to put on your related experience to bartending. (e.g. Waitress/Waiter) Some of employers will likely to see where  you have been with your previous job and the evolution of how you become a bartender. Functional resume format This resume format lists your experiences by SKILL first.  It is most often used by applicants who wanted a career-change. When a person has held different job during his/her lifetime, using this format will help determine what transferable skills are available. . If you want to switch to a bartender, you can simply list your skills which are related to bartending jobs. Learning how to bartend is not easy though, but some employers will want to find people who are hardworking, trustworthy and willing to work well with others.  They will look for potential!
Hybrid resume format

A format where both reverse chronological and functional  resume formats are mixed together. For example, listing work experiences by skill areas and also includes the period of employment would be a hybrid resume..

3. Layout and Design

Proper usage of layout and design for your bartender resume will give you more confidence and your resume will stand out. Layout and the design of your resume will vary with the following few that I list:

Selecting Font style and Fonts Size.
Proper alignment.
Equal Margins of all of the resume pages.

One of the challenges that jobseekers have to face is resume writing. There are a lot of resume formats available but you have to choose the right resume writing format for yourself. It is common in many office programs and word processors to have templates of resumes. Although these templates are okay to use, they hardly ever give you the exact thing that you want, particularly if you have to move parts of the resume, and delete or add sections.

The format itself, to tell you the truth, is really not much of a concern in resume writing. Provided that your resume is easy to understand, reader-friendly, arranged logically, and has a fine sense of balance (that is, the proportion of black text against a white background), then you don’t have to worry. Most people who will read your resume will be more concerned with the pertinent information written in it rather than its visual appeal. Resume readers would want your resume to have data prominently presented on the page in an easy-to-find manner, so don’t be distressed about which format looks more appealing.

If you don’t have any idea where to start, it is a good idea to browse the Internet for samples of resume. Some sites even give free downloads of resume samples. This way, though you may not get the exact resume you want, at least, you will get a rough draft or a design in your head just what elements of a resume you would want to employ in your own format. Bear in mind these two things when writing your resume: (1) the sections should be similar and coordinate with each other; (2) there should not be any drastic or exaggerated modifications in style used between sections.

There are quite a few problems that most resume writing format examples and templates share, as said by many resume writing experts. These problems include:
• the use of fonts that are too fancy or are too small, sacrificing readability of the resume
• too many additions such as underlines, bold and even italicized letters
• employing a lot of different types of fonts
Thus, when using a resume writing format on a template, pay attention to the different fonts and styles applied. As much as possible, employ one to two font sizes and choose only one font type. Also, restrict the use of bold, underline or italics to emphasizing and organizing only; however, don’t use all three of them in the same resume.

Employers can detect a bit of your personality based on the resume writing format that you choose. Therefore, choose the format you think will best reflect you. If you feel that a certain format is not you at all or if you do not feel comfortable using it, then search for more samples of formats until you find the one most suitable for you. Do not lose patience in searching because in the end you will feel satisfaction and contentment with the format you really want.

A fistful of pretty resumes won’t get you far in today’s job search. While you’re out schlepping from one company to the next, trying to talk your way past security and secretaries, your competitors are running rings around you electronically. To compete, you need to join them – sending your resume out over the internet, via email and online forms. And to do that, you need to have your electronic resume formatted for such.

E-Resumes – The 3 Most Common Formats

1) Word Document. Ah, the traditional resume. Fully-formatted and embellished with graphics and stylish fonts, the word-processed resume remains a force. Plain text formats have threatened its domination in recent years. But as resume screening software improves and human eyes tire of reading plain text, your fully-formatted resume in MS Word is being embraced in more and more email correspondence.

With this cautionary note. Due to security concerns, many such attachments won’t be opened for fear of a virus. Before sending out a Word attachment, call or email the HR department or your corporate contact person to find out the preferred method of getting a resume to their computer screen. Ask simply if you can send your resume as an attachment, in Word for example. If it’s impractical to pose the question, or you’re responding to an ad with no clear direction, go with plan B – send your resume as both a Word attachment and a plain text version as part of the email itself.

2) ASCII Format. An acronym for American Standard Code for Information Interchange, this is a mouthful of a term which simply means a plain-text file. In our case, a plain-text version of the fully-formatted Word document. Keep it handy. You’ll need it for those occasions when email attachments are not allowed, for pasting onto Web forms (for example, on job boards and when applying directly to job listings on corporate websites), and when responding via email to an employer who requests a plain-text resume only. In the latter cases, simply copy and paste your ASCII resume onto the body of your email.

3) PDF Format. Short for “Portable Document Format,” the PDF file format from Adobe Systems has become the defacto standard for printable documents on the Web, and is an increasingly common format for email resume attachments. PDF allows the sender to forward a fully-formatted resume (stylized graphics, attractive fonts, etc.) independent of it’s application software. Which means the receiving party can open and read the file regardless of whether they have Word on their computer. It’s also virtually virus proof, alleviating those security concerns.

You should be able to convert your Word resume to PDF right on your own computer although depending upon which version of Word you’re working with, you might have to download an “add-in” from Microsoft (i.e.”Microsoft Save as PDF” for 2007 Microsoft Office Programs). Or, you can bypass that procedure entirely in lieu of Web-based resources. For example, for a free and simple conversion, consider pdfonline. On their home page, click the heading “Free PDF Services” and follow the instructions. You’ll basically be uploading your fully-formatted Word or WordPerfect resume, and receiving a PDF version from them, sent to you as an email attachment.
