Job Resume Cover Letter Archives

Forget everything you’ve heard about how your resume is the most important thing when applying for a job.  Don’t get me wrong, you do need a resume but you really should not worry if it’s not a perfectly written, well oiled masterpiece.

Practically no one understands that the resume cover letter is actually the first thing an employer will look at when reading a resume and is also often used by many employers as a first means of elimination in the interviewing process. You could be missing out on your dream job just because your resume cover letter was not up to scratch.

Think about it, when an employer advertises a job they will most probably get a few hundred responses, maybe even more, from applicants that all want the job just as much as you. With so many applications it can be difficult for the hiring manager to pick the right employee for the job. If your resume cover letter does not stand out from the crowd and create a big impact then you risk missing out altogether.

Many job seekers will slap together a resume cover letter with no thought just to have something attached to their resume thinking that it has no importance whatsoever and this is why over 95% of all resumes don’t even get a second glance. A well written resume cover letter on the other hand can, and does, improve your chances of landing quality job interviews even if you lack experience or have a weak resume.

Your resume cover letter, not your resume, is your chance to sell yourself to a potential employer; it needs to be direct, to the point and needs to capture the employer’s interest within a few seconds of them picking it up. Show the employer that you are the person for the job by referring specifically to the qualifications listed in the job advertisement and illustrate how your particular abilities and experiences relate to the position you are applying for.

Fulfill the employer’s needs rather than your own and give evidence you have researched the organisation fully and that you possess skills used within that particular oganisation. Emphasise your achievements and problem-solving skills. Show how your education and work skills are transferable, and therefore relevant, to the position for which you are applying.

End your resume cover letter by reiterating your interest in the job and letting the employer know how they can reach you, include your phone number and/or email address and indicate that you will follow-up with a telephone call to set up an appointment at a mutually convenient time. Be sure to make the call within the time frame indicated within your resume cover letter. At the very least, you should ring the employer to confirm that your resume was received thus showing interest and determination.

Remember, you resume cover letter is your key to success not your resume. Fail to make a big impact with your letter and you risk failing altogether. Do not use the same old resume cover letter for every job you apply for, create a unique resume cover letter to cater for each individual job you apply for and by doing so I guarantee you that you will see an increase in the job offers you receive.

Online job applications, resume/cover letter?

Question by Madelynne: Online job applications, resume/cover letter?
I graduated from college in May and am currently applying for my first “real” job. The majority of my applications are online only. I’m noticing a trend on many applications where there is only room to create one attachment (resume). Does this mean that the employers do not want a cover letter, or should it be part of the resume file?

Even with fantastic grades and pages of extra-curricular activities on your resume the job market can be tough, and a successful interview is, perhaps, the one shot at getting an actual job. Preparing for a job interview in the psychology field includes learning proper interview skills and dressing the part. Interviewing for a career in the psychology field is not unlike any other field in terms of basic interview etiquette.

Start preparing for an interview by thinking about the questions an interviewer may ask and then rehearse the answers. Also take the time to do a little research about the organization you are applying to in case you are asked questions pertaining to the workplace. Plus, it never hurts to come across as knowledgeable and interested in the organization.

    Common interview questions include:

    • What are your strengths?
    • What are your goals?
    • Why did you leave your former organization?

Endeavor to answer all questions intelligently as candidates can often come across in a less-than-perfect light by answering questions improperly. Practice answering questions in front of a friend or family member. Speak slowly and make eye contact. Take a breath before answering a question. Take a moment to notice your body language during an interview. Slouching in a chair, leaning on the desk or shoving hands in pockets may be construed as unprofessional.

In addition to exhibiting proper behavior during an interview, dressing the part is essential. Keep the trendy clothes on the hanger when heading out for an interview. The key is to focus on dressing conservative. If possible try to discern the dress code at the organization, possibly by driving by before the interview or even calling the receptionist and asking. When in doubt, wear a suit – either navy or gray. Keep accessories to a minimum.

Grooming is also crucial before an interview. It is unlikely that candidates who appear slovenly will be asked back for a second interview. Keep fingernails short and clean and keep hairstyles conservative. Be careful with perfume or cologne as well – don’t spray on too much. Pop in a breath mint right before walking into the interview.
